As you can see, this frosting is striped with the red color. This is made possible with the red gel food color. So, if you're going to ask, I'm going to answer you now, no, you can't use a liquid food color for this! Why? Because the consistency of the liquid food color won't hold up or stay in the piping bag when you pipe the frosting. Unlike with the food gel, it's like paint, the color will stay no matter how many times you pipe the frosting. To sum it up, I suggest getting yourself a good quality food gel color if you want to make these cupcakes over the holidays.
